Naturpark Lüneburger Heide

Naturpark Lüneburger Heide is a large protected landscape in northern Lower Saxony, Germany, situated within the urban triangle formed by Hamburg, Bremen, and Hannover. Covering roughly 1,098 square kilometers, it encompasses a mosaic of heathlands, moors, and forested areas centered on the historic Naturschutzgebiet Lüneburger Heide around the Wilseder Berg. Established in 1922, it holds the distinction of being the first nature park ever designated in Germany, an outcome of early conservation efforts led by Pastor Wilhelm Bode and later expanded under the influence of Alfred Toepfer. The park protects some of the most extensive contiguous inland dwarf-shrub heathlands in Central Europe, originating from centuries of pastoral land use. Today it functions as a model region for sustainable development, integrating nature conservation, traditional cultural landscape management, environmental education, and landscape-based recreation across 37 municipalities.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
