Naturschutzgebiet Oberes Diemeltal

Naturschutzgebiet Oberes Diemeltal is a protected nature reserve of about 187 hectares in the Hochsauerlandkreis of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It covers the river Diemel and its undeveloped floodplain between Helminghausen, east of the Diemelsee reservoir, and the area near Giershagen, where it directly adjoins the sibling reserve Naturschutzgebiet Unteres Diemeltal. The reserve was designated in 2001 as part of the Hoppecketal landscape plan and is also integrated into larger European conservation frameworks. Since 2004 it has formed part of the FFH (Habitats Directive) site Gewässersystem Diemel und Hoppecke, and since 2023 it has been included in the bird protection area Vogelschutzgebiet Diemel- und Hoppecketal mit angrenzenden Wäldern. Together these designations reflect the reserve's role in protecting riverine and floodplain habitats in a region otherwise shaped by forests, reservoir management, and rural land use. The core of the area is the free-flowing Diemel with its tributaries, notably the Rhene, along with adjacent meadows, woodland fringes, and wetland margins. The reserve is valued for its rare floodplain flora, including species of monkshood that have been locally threatened by inappropriate land management, and for its broader function as a corridor for river and birdlife in the upper Diemel catchment.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
