Compare protected geography around a seasonal Sahelian lake system

Compare protected landscapes around Nguru Lake across Yobe's Sahelian wetlands

Nguru Lake fills a broad, very shallow basin in northeastern Nigeria, expanding with wet-season flow from the Marma Channel across the adjoining Hadejia-Nguru floodplain, Dagona oxbows, marshes, and wet grassland before drawdown exposes mudflats. The nearby map locates protected records around Yobe while preserving their catchments, Ramsar status, and flood cycles.

Nguru Lake

Nguru Lake is a shallow, endorheic freshwater lake in northwestern Nigeria, situated in Yobe State just south of the town of Nguru. It sits at roughly 342 meters above sea level and covers about 37 square kilometers, with average depths around 2.5 meters and a maximum depth of about 7 meters. The lake forms the northern reach of the broader Hadejia-Nguru wetlands, one of the most significant wetland systems in the Sahelian zone of West Africa. The lake is fed by the Marma Channel, which branches off the Hadejia River, part of the larger Komadugu Yobe river system. Because it has no outflow, the lake is highly seasonal: it floods between August and November when monsoon-driven inflows swell the watershed, and it contracts sharply during the long dry season from November through April. The lake and its surrounding floodplain together with the nearby Dagona oxbow lakes form a Ramsar-recognized wetland and an integral component of Chad Basin National Park, now called the Dagona Waterfowl Sanctuary. Nguru Lake is most notable as a staging and wintering ground for migratory waterbirds from the northern hemisphere, with the broader complex supporting around 20,000 waterbirds. It also sustains a productive fishery, anchored ecologically by algal blooms that feed a diverse fish community. While it is not itself a standalone national park, its ecological and conservation weight is tied directly to the larger Chad Basin protected landscape in which it is embedded.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
