Nosy Mangabe

Nosy Mangabe is a small forested island reserve situated in Antongil Bay on the northeast coast of Madagascar, just a few kilometers offshore from the town of Maroantsetra. The island forms part of the broader Masoala National Park complex, one of the largest protected rainforest areas in the country and the African region. Its dense humid tropical forest, dramatic bay setting, and rich history of maritime encounters give it a distinctive identity among Madagascar’s protected areas. The reserve is internationally recognized for its population of aye-aye, a rare and ecologically unusual nocturnal lemur native to Madagascar’s forests. Aye-ayes were introduced to the island in the 1960s as a safeguard for the species, which had been persecuted and was in serious decline across the mainland. Today, Nosy Mangabe serves as both a refuge for this endangered primate and a natural laboratory for primate research and rainforest conservation. Although small in size compared with mainland national parks, Nosy Mangabe holds considerable ecological and cultural value. Its combination of lowland rainforest, lemur populations, archaeological traces of European seafarers, and easy access from Maroantsetra makes it a focal point of eco-tourism and primatology in the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
