Park Natury Zalewu Szczecińskiego

Park Natury Zalewu Szczecińskiego is a nature park in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of north-western Poland, opened on 7 October 2005. It covers roughly 4,000 hectares of coastal meadows, pastures, forest fragments of the Goleniów Forest, and waters of the Szczecin Lagoon near the town of Stepnica and the Wolin Island area. The park was created by an environmental NGO, the Association for the Coast (Stowarzyszenie na Rzecz Wybrzeża), together with the Maritime Office in Szczecin, the Goleniów Forest District, and the communes of Stepnica and Wolin. It is presented as the first site in Poland where active nature protection principles of the European Natura 2000 network are being put into practice, managed as a partnership project rather than a classical state-run reserve. Its defining feature is the use of large grazing animals, including Polish koniks and Scottish Highland cattle, to keep reedbeds and low-value grasses in check while preserving open coastal habitats. The park combines traditional agricultural practice, environmental education, recreation, and community engagement into a single model for sustainable development around a major lagoon ecosystem.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
