Parque Nacional Aarón de Anchorena

Parque Nacional Aarón de Anchorena is a protected area in southwestern Uruguay, set on the left bank of the Río San Juan where it flows into the Río de la Plata, in the department of Colonia. The park was created through the bequest of the Argentine aristocrat Aarón de Anchorena, who donated part of his estancia to the Uruguayan state so that the land could serve as a place for conservation, public enjoyment, and the resting residence of the country's presidents. The landscape combines open lawns, ornamental woodlands of introduced trees, riverbanks, and stretches of shoreline facing the broad estuary of the Río de la Plata. The park also functions as Uruguay's second most important arboretum, with more than two hundred tree and shrub species collected from several continents, alongside populations of introduced animals, most famously the axis deer that roam its grounds in visible herds. Within the park stand the historic Anchorena residence, now used as a presidential country retreat, and the iconic Torre Gaboto, a tall stone tower-lighthouse that offers sweeping views across the river toward Argentina. The combination of natural beauty, planted gardens, heritage buildings, and river scenery has given the park a distinctive cultural and ecological character among Uruguay's protected areas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
