Pōhatu Marine Reserve

Pōhatu Marine Reserve is a no-take marine protected area on the southern coast of Banks Peninsula, in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. The 215 hectare reserve is centered on Pōhatu / Flea Bay, a sheltered inlet framed by high volcanic cliffs and bordered by rocky reefs, kelp forests, and small sandy beaches. It lies a short distance from the larger Akaroa Marine Reserve and Akaroa Tāiapure, forming part of a broader network of marine protection along the peninsula. The reserve is notable for the contrast it offers between a wild, cliff-bound coastal environment and its proximity to farmland and small settlements. Its waters support Hector's dolphins, dusky dolphins, and New Zealand fur seals, while its intertidal reefs shelter pāua, kina, crayfish, and a mix of reef fish including blue cod and trumpeter. Onshore, the surrounding beach and adjacent private land host the largest little penguin (kororā) and yellow-eyed penguin (hoiho) colony on Banks Peninsula, making the area a focal point for coastal wildlife conservation. Established in 1999 after a long and contested planning process, Pōhatu was the first marine reserve on the east coast of the South Island. Despite its small size, baseline and follow-up studies have recorded increases in fish biomass and species richness inside the reserve, demonstrating it functions as a meaningful refuge alongside its larger Akaroa neighbour.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
