Quebrada de los Cuervos y Sierras del Yerbal Protected Landscape

Quebrada de los Cuervos y Sierras del Yerbal is a protected landscape in eastern Uruguay, located in the department of Treinta y Tres and administered through Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas (SNAP). The landscape is dominated by a dramatic gorge carved by the Yerbal Chico stream through ancient metamorphic rocks, with elevations rising to roughly 300 meters above sea level along the surrounding sierras and dropping along the steep slopes of the quebrada itself. The protected area is celebrated for its unusual combination of geology, microclimate, and biodiversity. Within its rugged terrain, subtropical elements colonize the sheltered ravine walls, producing a distinctive forest mosaic that includes palms, ferns, lianas, and a notable presence of yerba mate, alongside native grasslands and rocky outcrops higher on the slopes. The area is also recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA), supporting threatened grassland and forest bird species as well as large cathartid vultures that inspired the site's name. Since its formal incorporation into the national protected areas system in 2008, and especially after a significant expansion in 2020, the landscape has come to function as a reference site for the management of Uruguay's eastern hill country. It aims to balance conservation of its biodiversity and cultural values with the region's traditional extensive cattle-raising economy, emerging agroecological initiatives, and a growing tourism interest in its scenery, waterfalls, and wildlife.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
