Cuyabeno Fauna Production Reserve

The Reserva de Producción de Fauna Cuyabeno is a large protected area in the northeastern Amazon region of Ecuador, situated in the province of Sucumbíos and extending toward the border with Peru. It encompasses an extensive tract of humid tropical forest shaped by a network of slow-moving blackwater and sediment-rich rivers that seasonally flood thousands of hectares of lowland terrain. The reserve is part of Ecuador's National System of Protected Areas and is recognized as one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, often compared to the neighboring Yasuní National Park. Its mosaic of swamp forests, palm-dominated morichales, várzea and igapó floodplains, permanent and semi-permanent lagoons, and patches of terra firme forest supports extraordinary concentrations of wildlife, including river dolphins, jaguar, tapir, monkeys, caimans, and hundreds of bird and fish species. Beyond its ecological importance, Cuyabeno holds deep cultural significance for indigenous Cofán and Siona-Secoya communities that live along the Aguarico and Cuyabeno rivers. The reserve has also become Ecuador's flagship Amazonian ecotourism destination, where community-based lodges and guided river and lagoon excursions showcase the rainforest's scenic and biological richness.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
