Réserve naturelle nationale du Pinail

The Réserve naturelle nationale du Pinail is a national nature reserve in the Vienne department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of west-central France, occupying 135 hectares of a plateau that dominates the valleys of the Vienne and the Clain rivers. It lies just north of the Moulière forest and about halfway between Poitiers and Châtellerault, on the commune of Vouneuil-sur-Vienne. The reserve protects a strikingly unusual cultural-ecological landscape: thousands of small water-filled depressions, the remains of centuries of quarrying for millstones, set within a low heathland of heather and dwarf gorse. The combination of acidic ponds, peat-forming zones, marly seepages, and dry moorland has produced habitats that are now rare and threatened across the broader region. Created by decree on 30 January 1980 and recognised as a Ramsar wetland site in 2021, the Pinail is managed by the association GEREPI. It is valued for its orchids, carnivorous plants, amphibians, dragonflies, and a remarkable density of breeding birds, including hobby falcons, Montagu's harriers, short-toed snake eagles, and Dartford warblers.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
