Réserve spéciale du Cap Sainte-Marie

The Réserve spéciale du Cap Sainte-Marie is a small protected natural area located at the extreme southern tip of Madagascar, in the Androy region near the Cape Sainte-Marie headland. It sits within a dry, spiny landscape characteristic of the island's deep south, and protects an arid coastal habitat of low vegetation, sandy soils, and thorny thicket. Despite its modest size, the reserve carries major conservation significance as one of the last strongholds for two of Madagascar's most threatened tortoises: the radiated tortoise and the spider tortoise. Its position at the southern extremity of the country, far from major roads and population centers, gives the reserve a remote and exposed character. The harsh climate, sparse vegetation, and limited freshwater availability make it an especially demanding environment for wildlife, yet this very isolation has also helped preserve reptile populations that have collapsed elsewhere on the island. The reserve remains an important reference site for tortoise conservation, research, and the long-term survival of Madagascar's unique arid-zone reptiles.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
