Rio Kapatchez Managed Nature Reserve

The Rio Kapatchez Managed Nature Reserve is a coastal wetland reserve set along the Atlantic coast of western Guinea. It lies within the Boké region, north of Cap Verga and roughly thirty kilometers south of the port town of Kamsar, stretching between Pointe Gonzalez at the mouth of the Rio Nunez and the Koumba river. The reserve centers on the estuary of the Kapatchez river, also known locally as the Katako, where freshwater from the river meets the tidal waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This tidal exchange, together with the brackish and mangrove-influenced habitats it creates, gives the site its ecological character and underlies its international recognition. The area was formally listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in November 1992 and is identified as Ramsar site number 573. It is one of the key coastal conservation areas of the Boké coast, and it has been shaped by long-term silting processes that have altered its tidal channels since the early twentieth century.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
