Ríos Blanco y Negro Wildlife Reserve

The Ríos Blanco y Negro Wildlife Reserve is a large protected area in northeastern Bolivia, situated in the department of Santa Cruz within the provinces of Ñuflo de Chávez and Guarayos. Covering approximately 1.4 million hectares, it occupies a transitional belt between the Chiquitano Dry Forest ecosystem and the Amazon basin, blending elements of both ecoregions and supporting exceptionally high biodiversity. The reserve is defined hydrologically as well as ecologically, since the San Pablo and Blanco rivers shape seasonal floodplains that create extensive várzea, or seasonally flooded forests. These forests are crucial for the region's water regulation and provide habitat, food, and resources for both wildlife and the indigenous Guarayo and Chiquitano communities that live around the reserve. Established in 1990, the reserve was created to preserve biological diversity while promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. Although illegal logging, unregulated hunting and fishing, and agricultural expansion continue to threaten portions of the area, it remains one of the most important landscapes for lowland forest conservation in the Bolivian lowlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
