Roe Estuary Nature Reserve

Roe Estuary Nature Reserve is a protected area on the southeastern shore of Lough Foyle in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It lies at the mouth of the River Roe, near the small rural locality of Aghanloo and roughly six kilometers north of the market town of Limavady. The reserve protects a mosaic of coastal habitats typical of large sheltered estuaries in the northwest of Ireland, including extensive salt marsh, intertidal mudflats, and beds of eel grass that together support rich invertebrate life and abundant bird populations. The reserve is most valued for its birdlife, functioning as a seasonal gathering point for migrating waders, waterfowl, and geese. Beyond birds, the estuary also serves as a transitional corridor for migratory fish such as salmon traveling between the River Roe and Lough Foyle, while otters have been recorded hunting along its banks. Its setting, framed by the Binevenagh escarpment to the east and the broad Magilligan plain to the north, gives the reserve a strong sense of place at the interface between lowland coast and inland mountain scarp.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
