Spitzerberg Nature Reserve

Spitzerberg is a nature reserve in eastern Austria, located in the municipality of Prellenkirchen in the province of Lower Austria. It covers the Spitzerberg hill, the southern extension of the Hundsheimer Berge range, and is one of the largest nature reserves in Lower Austria. The protected area is defined by its dry, rocky environment. Steep slopes of limestone and dolomite combined with a very thin humus layer produce an extremely arid landscape, supporting rock steppes, dry and semi-dry grasslands, and dry forests. These habitats give the site strong Pannonian steppe character and considerable ecological value at the interface between the Alps and the Hungarian lowlands. Granted IUCN Category IV status in 1981 and incorporated into the Natura 2000 network through the Hundsheimer Berge site, Spitzerberg represents a focused effort to conserve a rare combination of calcareous grassland and dry forest habitat in central Europe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
