Subic Watershed Forest Reserve

The Subic Watershed Forest Reserve is a protected forest reserve on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, covering an area of about 6,261 hectares. It lies in the northwest of Bataan province and the south of Zambales province, stretching from the northwestern slopes of Mount Natib down toward Subic Bay. The reserve protects a varied landscape that combines grass savannas with evergreen lowland rainforest, forming part of a larger forested area of roughly 9,800 hectares that has been the subject of botanical surveys documenting around 745 plant species. The reserve borders the Subic Bay Freeport Zone to the northwest and adjoins Bataan National Park to the southeast, and it forms part of the broader Zambales Biosphere Reserve. Ecologically, the area is significant because it shelters several species endemic to the Philippines, including the giant cloud rat, the golden-crowned flying fox, the Philippine deer, and the Philippine warty pig. Its birdlife includes the Philippine duck, Philippine hawk-eagle, red-vented cockatoo, Luzon racket-tailed parrot, Philippine eagle-owl, and the green-faced parrotfinch, making it an important area for both forest conservation and endemic wildlife on western Luzon.
