A historic Andean game reserve in Cajamarca shaped by deer, dry forests, and former hacienda lands.

Sunchubamba Game Reserve

Sunchubamba Game Reserve is a protected area in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru, occupying roughly 600 square kilometers of dry Andean slopes that were once part of the Casa Grande hacienda. Classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area, it is managed for the sustainable use of natural resources, with trophy hunting as its most prominent traditional activity. The reserve is notable for both its native vegetation, including molle and aliso, and its unusual wildlife history, particularly the introduction of red deer in the mid-twentieth century. The landscape combines patches of native dry forest with introduced conifer and eucalyptus plantations, giving the reserve a mixed and somewhat unusual vegetation profile for the region. Beyond its hunting tradition, Sunchubamba has also hosted scientific work, including early cloud seeding experiments carried out on the former hacienda lands. Together, these characteristics make it a distinct example of a South American game reserve where ecological, historical, and land-use layers intersect.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
