Rugged forest wilderness on Sweden's ancient granite plateau

Tiveden National Park

Tiveden National Park is a protected wilderness area in southern Sweden spanning the border between Västra Götaland County and Örebro County. The park encompasses approximately 2,030 hectares of wild forest growing over rugged terrain characterized by ancient granite bedrock, deep fracture valleys, and scattered lakes and marshes. Established in 1983 and significantly expanded in 2017, Tiveden represents one of the few remaining large tracts of older forest in this historical region of Västergötland. The landscape bears the geological imprint of massive tectonic events dating back nearly a billion years, when the formation of Lake Vättern split the granite in the distinctive rectangular fracture patterns still visible today. The park serves as a biological crossroads where northern and southern species distributions meet, creating a unique ecological transitional zone in the heart of Sweden's forested interior.
