Andes volcanic wilderness protecting temperate rainforests and three prominent stratovolcanoes

Villarrica National Park

Villarrica National Park is a protected area spanning the Andes Mountains in south-central Chile, encompassing parts of both La Araucanía and Los Ríos regions. The park is distinguished by a dramatic volcanic landscape centered on three prominent stratovolcanoes that form a transverse line across the Andean range: Villarrica, Quetrupillán, and Lanín, the latter reaching 3,776 meters as the park's highest peak. The terrain descends from these alpine heights through progressively lower elevations to approximately 600 meters, creating diverse ecological zones within a relatively compact area. The park forms part of the Bosques Templados Lluviosos de los Andes Australes Biosphere Reserve, recognizing its significance within the broader network of southern Andean temperate forests. Established in 1940 through Decree Supremo N° 2236, the park protects a critical corridor of native forest and volcanic terrain that supports both ecological conservation and significant tourism activity centered around the popular adventure destination of Pucón.
