Vogelschutzgebiet am Wildmeisterdamm in Rudow

Vogelschutzgebiet am Wildmeisterdamm in Rudow is a very small protected woodland in the south of Berlin, located in the Gropiusstadt area of the Neukölln district. Despite its modest size of roughly 3.75 hectares, the site has carried formal protection for decades: it was designated as a bird sanctuary in 1934 and placed under landscape protection status in 1952, making it one of the older small-scale green spaces in the city. The woodland is a mixed broadleaf patch built around birch, oak, linden, chestnut, poplar, elm, and wild cherry trees, and it functions as an important refuge for urban birdlife. Historically recorded species count once reached 46, and roughly half of those still breed in the area today, underscoring the site's continued ecological value for an inner-city setting. Its significance lies less in scale than in historical and ecological continuity: the area was first planted as a royal game reserve in 1872, evolved into a bird protection zone in the 1930s, survived disruptive infrastructure projects during the division of Berlin, and was reshaped in the late 1980s into the landscaped green heart of the Gropiusstadt development.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
