Abijatta-Shalla National Park

Abijatta-Shalla National Park is a protected area in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, situated approximately 200 kilometers south of Addis Ababa in the eastern Horn of Africa. The park encompasses two major alkaline Rift Valley lakes, Abijatta and Shalla, which were formed through volcanic activity associated with the O'a Caldera. Covering 887 square kilometers, the park lies at elevations between 1540 and 2075 meters above sea level, with Mount Fike serving as the highest peak between the two lakes. The park occupies a distinctive ecological niche within the Ethiopian Highlands, protecting a landscape of volcanic origin that includes hot springs, hilly terrain, and saline lake environments. Its location along the Rift Valley corridor places it within a region of significant ornithological importance, where migratory and resident bird populations converge around the alkaline waters. The park was established in 1974 under the management of the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority. Abijatta-Shalla contains diverse habitats ranging from open grasslands and dry savannas to arid shrublands and deciduous woodland. The park supports remarkable biodiversity, with 76 mammal species and over 300 bird species recorded within its boundaries. The alkaline lakes provide critical feeding and breeding grounds for populations of greater and lesser flamingos, while the surrounding landscapes harbor species adapted to semi-arid conditions.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
