India's only active volcano, rising from the Andaman Sea

Barren Island

Barren Island is a small uninhabited volcanic island in the Andaman Sea, administered as part of India's Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It lies roughly 138 kilometers northeast of Port Blair and represents the only confirmed active volcano in the Indian subcontinent, as well as the only currently active volcano along a chain that extends from Sumatra to Myanmar. The island is the emergent summit of a stratovolcano crowned by pyroclastic cones and surrounded by a submerged caldera. Its oldest exposed lava flows date back around 1.6 million years, and the underlying oceanic crust is far older still. Despite frequent eruptions and an evocative name, the volcano supports patches of forest, fresh-water springs, a small herd of feral goats, and a recovering community of birds, bats, and rodents. Because of its remote setting and ongoing volcanic activity, Barren Island has also become a celebrated destination for advanced scuba diving, with the surrounding waters offering clear visibility, manta rays, coral gardens, and distinctive basalt formations shaped by successive lava flows.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
