Buckaringa Sanctuary

Buckaringa Sanctuary is a privately owned nature reserve of roughly twenty square kilometres in the southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia, about thirty kilometres north of the town of Quorn. The sanctuary sits on the western edge of the Flinders Lofty biogeographic zone in the central Flinders Ranges, protecting a landscape of folded sedimentary ridges, steep-sided gorges, and arid plains within a region of cool winters, hot summers, and low annual rainfall. The reserve is owned and managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, which took over the property in 2002 after it had previously been operated as a wildlife reserve by Earth Sanctuaries. Before that, the land was a pastoral lease used for sheep grazing and cereal cropping from the 1880s until 1990, and more than a century of grazing and cultivation has left a lasting imprint on its vegetation. Today Buckaringa is best known as one of the most important strongholds for the threatened yellow-footed rock-wallaby, a species that has shaped the sanctuary's central management objective and inspired an active program of feral animal control and habitat restoration.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
