Dr. José Gregorio Hernández National Park

Dr. José Gregorio Hernández National Park is a protected area in the Venezuelan Andes, located where the states of Trujillo, Mérida, and Barinas meet in the western part of the country. Created in 2021, it became Venezuela's 45th national park and represents one of the newer additions to the country's system of high-mountain reserves. The park covers approximately 505 square kilometers of Andean terrain and functions as a critical ecological connector between Guaramacal National Park and the Sierra Nevada de Mérida. Its establishment was based on years of ecological research aimed at protecting one of the largest remaining habitats of the spectacled bear (known locally as the oso frontino), an endangered and rarely seen species in Venezuela. Beyond its role in wildlife conservation, the park protects the upper watersheds of the Santo Domingo and Calderas rivers and includes part of the Teta de Niquitao-Guirigay Natural Monument. It also encompasses large portions of the Boconó and Pueblo Llano municipalities and lies near the José Antonio Páez hydroelectric facility, linking conservation with regional hydrological importance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
