Montenegro's flagship Dinaric massif of peaks, glacial lakes, and Europe's deepest canyon

Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is a large protected area in northwestern Montenegro, centered on the Durmitor massif, one of the most prominent ranges of the Dinaric Alps. The park combines high mountain terrain, a constellation of glacial lakes, and a series of dramatic river canyons, making it the country's flagship reserve for landscape protection. Its dominant peak is Bobotov Kuk at 2,523 meters, and the massif includes 48 summits above 2,000 meters that rise around the Jezerska površ plateau, sometimes called the Plateau of Lakes. Eighteen glacial lakes, locally nicknamed Gorske Oči or mountain eyes, are scattered across the massif, with Black Lake being the most visited and recognized. The park's identity is closely tied to the Tara River Canyon, which the reserve also encompasses and which, at 1,300 meters deep and roughly 80 kilometers long, is the deepest gorge in Europe. Established in 1952 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980, Durmitor is Montenegro's largest protected area. It is the heart of Montenegrin mountain tourism, supporting hiking, climbing, and skiing around the gateway town of Žabljak, and serves as a benchmark example of Dinaric mountain conservation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
