Elliot Price Conservation Park

Elliot Price Conservation Park is a strict nature reserve in the far north of South Australia, occupying a large stretch of the Hunt Peninsula and Brooks Island at the southern end of Lake Eyre. The conservation park covers roughly 635 square kilometres of arid, largely ungrazed landscape and is classified as a strict nature reserve under international protected area standards. It is bordered on three sides by the much larger Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, together forming one of the most significant continuous arid-zone protected complexes in central Australia. The landscape is dominated by limestone outcrops along the lake shoreline, thin layers of wind-blown sand, saltpans and low depressions that mirror the bed of Lake Eyre itself. Because the reserve has remained free of pastoral grazing, it serves as an important benchmark for comparing the effects of livestock use on the surrounding rangelands. Several rare plant species and uncommon bird species have been documented here, reinforcing the reserve's value as a reference site for South Australia's arid-zone ecology. Established in 1967 after pastoralist Elliott Price voluntarily surrendered his lease for conservation purposes, the area has been protected under successive South Australian park legislation. Although once known as Elliot Price Wilderness National Park, it was reclassified as a conservation park in 1972 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act. The reserve is currently closed to public access, reflecting its strict nature reserve status and the fragility of its arid ecosystems.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
