Fire Island National Seashore

Fire Island National Seashore is a United States National Seashore that protects roughly twenty-six miles of Fire Island, a barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island in New York. The park stretches across most of the island's length while the island itself runs approximately thirty miles in total and averages only about half a mile wide, separated from Long Island by the broad, shallow waters of the Great South Bay. The protected landscape blends sweeping ocean beaches with a varied interior of dunes, pine forests, salt marshes, and the unusual ecological community of the Sunken Forest. Beyond its natural character, the seashore is notable for its role as a maritime pathway, for its handful of historic private communities, and for the William Floyd House estate, a separate unit tied to a signer of the Declaration of Independence. As the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State and one of the smallest managed by the National Park Service, the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness adds a wild, undeveloped counterpoint to the more visited western portions of the park. Fire Island National Seashore therefore combines an accessible coastal experience with a quieter, ecologically sensitive interior.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
