Map protected geography around Denmark’s deepest lake and glacial valley

Map surrounding protected landscapes from Furesø across North Zealand's glacial lake country

Furesø fills an Ice Age tunnel valley in North Zealand, dividing into a deep main basin and shallower Store Kalv beneath forested ridges and moraine hills, with soft shores, wet meadow, peat pools, and alder swamp. Explore nearby Danish protected geography on the map while keeping each lake, wetland, and forest record distinct.

Denmark's deepest lake, set in the wooded glacial landscape of North Zealand.

Furesø

Furesø is a large lake in North Zealand, situated roughly twelve kilometers northwest of central Copenhagen. It is the deepest lake in Denmark, with a maximum depth of around 38 meters, and is one of the most significant freshwater bodies in the broader Mølleå river system, which winds through several connected lakes before reaching the Øresund. The lake lies in a glacially formed tunnel valley, surrounded by woodland, wetland, and meadows that together create a varied natural landscape close to a major metropolitan area. Several zones along its shores are protected, including the Vaserne wetland area, Næsset, areas near Frederiksdal, and Stavnsholt, and the lake itself is part of the European Natura 2000 network as both a habitat area and a bird protection area. Furesø is owned by the Danish Ministry of the Environment and managed by the Nature Agency's local unit, and it has long attracted freshwater biologists, painters, and visitors. Restoration work in the early 2000s aimed to bring its nutrient balance closer to the cleaner state it enjoyed around the year 1900, while its cultural presence in Danish art and poetry is anchored in works such as C.W. Eckersberg's 1833 landscape painting and Christian Winther's well-known verse.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
