Guaramacal National Park

Guaramacal National Park is a protected area of roughly 215 square kilometers that spans the border between the Venezuelan states of Trujillo and Portuguesa. It encompasses the Ramal de Guaramacal, the northernmost offshoot of the Cordillera de Mérida, and rises from humid sub-Andean forests near 1,600 meters to the open páramo grasslands above 3,000 meters. The park is notable for being one of the most biologically rich enclaves in northern Venezuela, harboring more than a thousand documented plant species and a high proportion of endemic amphibians, reptiles, and birds. Within walking distance of the Andean town of Boconó, Guaramacal serves as a critical refuge for Andean wildlife and a key site for cloud forest and páramo research in the country.
