Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forested area located on the northern outskirts of Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It sits in the foothills of the Eastern Ghats and represents one of the few surviving patches of East Deccan dry evergreen forest near a major coastal city. The sanctuary covers around 70 square kilometers of hilly terrain interspersed with scrub, meadows, and forested valleys. The area was brought under forest department control in 1970 after previously being managed by the Maharajah of Vizianagaram, and it has since been managed by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department. Its ecological character blends dry evergreen species with hardy scrub vegetation, supporting a population of deer, small carnivores, reptiles, and a rich birdlife. As an urban-adjacent sanctuary, it plays a significant role in conservation education and nature-based recreation for the Visakhapatnam region. The sanctuary's proximity to Visakhapatnam, just a few kilometers from the city center, makes it a notable example of a peri-urban protected landscape in southern India. It is widely recognized for the Indian leopard as an indicator species and for its mosaic of habitats within the Eastern Ghats ecosystem.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
