Laguna Madre

Laguna Madre is one of the world's largest hypersaline coastal lagoons, stretching for more than 200 kilometers along the Tamaulipan coast of northeastern Mexico. Separated from the Gulf of Mexico by a long system of barrier islands, the lagoon is extremely shallow and almost landlocked, giving it a salinity that frequently surpasses ordinary seawater many times over. The lagoon is recognized internationally as a Ramsar wetland and forms part of a protected area that also includes the Río Bravo (Rio Grande) delta. Mexican and international designations created in 2005 and 2006 together protect the lagoon as both a national flora and fauna protection area and a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Ecologically, Laguna Madre is one of Mexico's most significant coastal bird areas, sustaining nesting, wintering, and migratory shorebird populations as well as seagrass meadows, mangroves, and a hypersaline landscape that supports commercial shrimp fisheries and endangered sea turtles.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
