Mapesu Private Game Reserve

Mapesu Private Game Reserve is a privately managed conservation area in South Africa's Limpopo Province, situated in the far northern corner of the country near the town of Musina. Established in 2014, the reserve covers roughly 12,500 hectares of mopane-dominated savanna, sharing a long northern boundary with Mapungubwe National Park and forming a natural extension of that World Heritage area. The landscape of Mapesu is shaped by undulating plains, sandy ridges, rocky hills, and a network of drainage lines, producing a mosaic of thirteen distinct vegetation communities despite the apparent uniformity of mopane woodland. Large baobabs, fever trees, camel thorn, lead wood, shepherd's tree, and illala palm contribute to the reserve's botanical character, while a single baobab specimen reaches a circumference of around fifteen metres. Mapesu is recognized as a Big Five reserve, with elephant, lion, leopard, white rhino, and Cape buffalo present alongside cheetah introduced through the Endangered Wildlife Trust's metapopulation project. Its mix of mopane bushveld, riparian habitats, and river-border ecology with the Limpopo River supports a varied mammal community and an exceptional bird list of more than 380 recorded species, including seasonal migrants and rare dry-western endemics.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
