Maud Island (Te Hoiere)

Maud Island, known in te reo Māori as Te Hoiere, is one of the larger islands of the Marlborough Sounds at the northeastern tip of New Zealand's South Island. Covering roughly 320 hectares of hilly, forested terrain, it sits roughly halfway along Pelorus Sound / Te Hoiere and is split into two landmasses linked by a narrow isthmus. The island is uninhabited and operates as a tightly restricted nature reserve under New Zealand's Reserves Act, formally known as the Te Pākeka / Maud Island Scientific Reserve. Public access is highly limited; only scientists and approved conservation workers are allowed onto the island, with all visitors requiring a permit from the Department of Conservation. Maud Island's importance to New Zealand conservation is exceptional. It became one of the earliest predator-free offshore sanctuaries used for the recovery of critically endangered native species, most notably the kākāpō, and it is also the namesake home of a distinctive native frog, the Maud Island frog. Today the island is valued mainly as a living laboratory for species recovery, ecological research, and the protection of a sheltered coastal ecosystem.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
