Meob-Chamais Islands' Marine Protected Area

The Meob-Chamais Islands' Marine Protected Area is Namibia's first designated marine and island protected area, established along the country's southern Atlantic coast. Stretching across roughly 20,000 square kilometres of ocean and coastal islands, the reserve extends southward from Meob Bay for about 400 kilometres to Chamais Bay, near the coastal town of Luderitz, and reaches 30 kilometres westward into the Atlantic Ocean. It encompasses ten islands and numerous smaller islets and rocks, including parts of the Penguin Islands group. The reserve was created to safeguard the unique marine flora and fauna of the region, and it is organized into four management zones under the IUCN Category VI framework. Among its most significant conservation values are seabird breeding colonies, including the world's largest colony of bank cormorants, as well as African penguins that haul out on rocky islands such as Halifax Island. The site is administered through the Namibian Coast Conservation and Management Project (NACOMA), reflecting Namibia's growing commitment to integrated coastal and marine conservation. Beyond its current boundaries, long-term plans envision extending marine protection along Namibia's entire Atlantic coastline, potentially reaching as far north as Sandwich Harbour and the Walvis Bay lagoon. This forward-looking strategy positions Meob-Chamais as the foundation of what could become one of the most extensive coastal conservation networks in southern Africa.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
