Moutohora Island

Moutohora Island (previously known as Whale Island) is a small uninhabited volcanic island lying off the Bay of Plenty coast of New Zealand's North Island, roughly nine kilometres north of Whakatāne. Covering about 1.43 square kilometres, the island is the eroded remnant of a complex volcano that still displays active geothermal features, including hot springs in Sulphur Valley, McEwans Bay, and Sulphur Bay. Its twin volcanic peaks rise to about 353 metres above the sea. The island has been protected as a wildlife refuge since 1965 and was purchased by the Crown in 1984, after which introduced mammals were eradicated and a large native planting programme was undertaken. Today Moutohora hosts important seabird breeding colonies, native forest restoration, and a rich surrounding marine ecosystem frequented by dolphins, whales, and sharks. Its combination of volcanic origin, regenerating forest, and offshore biodiversity makes it one of the more distinctive small-island protected areas along the Bay of Plenty coastline.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
