San Miguel National Park

San Miguel National Park is one of Uruguay's oldest protected areas, located in the northeastern part of Rocha Department near the border with Brazil. The park covers roughly 1,542 hectares of low hills, wetlands, native woodland, and open prairie, and it is anchored by the restored Fuerte de San Miguel, a 1737 Spanish military fortification declared a National Monument in 1937. The landscape combines the modest heights of the Sierra de San Miguel with surrounding bañados, or seasonal wetlands, that give the park a strong ecological character. It protects native fauna and flora as well as an unusual population of criollo or feral cattle descended from livestock first introduced to the region by Hernandarias in the seventeenth century. The cattle are managed as a genetic reserve and are recognized by UNESCO. The park's significance is both natural and cultural: it preserves wildlife and characteristic eastern-Uruguayan vegetation, while also safeguarding a colonial military site and one of the country's most distinctive heritage livestock populations. Integrated into Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas since 2010, it stands as a layered blend of landscape, history, and conservation purpose.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
