Pirongia Forest Park

Pirongia Forest Park is a protected forest park in the western Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island, roughly 30 kilometres southwest of Hamilton and encompassing parts of the western landscape near Raglan. It straddles the foothills and summits of two prominent landforms: the volcanic Mount Pirongia inland, and the steep coastal Mount Karioi that overlooks the Tasman Sea near Raglan. The park is best understood as a large, fragmented forest reserve built around surviving patches of lowland and hill podocarp forest in an otherwise heavily farmed region. Its mild, very wet climate supports dense native bush, dramatic waterfalls nearby, and a network of walking tracks ranging from short family strolls to longer summit tramps. Pirongia Forest Park is notable both ecologically and culturally. It lies near the natural southern limit of kauri forest, marks an important transition zone where podocarp forest gives way to southern beech, and contains New Zealand's tallest recorded native tree, a kahikatea standing around 66.5 metres tall. The surrounding landscape also carries deep significance for local iwi, whose long association with the forests, peaks, and streams continues to shape how the area is understood today.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
