Pureora Forest Park

Pureora Forest Park is a large protected rainforest reserve in the central North Island of New Zealand, covering roughly 760 square kilometres between Lake Taupō and the town of Te Kūiti. It straddles the boundary between the Waikato and Manawatū-Whanganui regions, sitting at the meeting point of the Rangitoto and Hauhungaroa Ranges. The park preserves one of the largest intact tracts of native forest remaining on the North Island. Its lower slopes are clothed in mixed broadleaf rainforest dominated by tawa and tree ferns, while stands of massive podocarp trees, including rimu, kahikatea, mataī, miro, and tōtara, tower above the canopy. Many of these trees are more than a thousand years old, and the park is widely regarded as one of the finest rainforests in the world. Beyond its ecological significance, Pureora carries a strong conservation and cultural legacy. Created in 1978 following pioneering tree-sit protests against logging, it embodies a turning point in New Zealand's environmental history. Today it is valued for its ancient trees, rare birdlife including the North Island kōkako, and a range of outdoor experiences such as the Timber Trail and mountain routes to the park's highest peaks.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
