Réserve naturelle régionale de la côte de Bois-en-Val

The Réserve naturelle régionale de la côte de Bois-en-Val is a small regional nature reserve in northern France, covering about 24 hectares on the wooded slopes east of Charleville-Mézières in the Ardennes department. It occupies the coteaux of Berthaucourt on the right bank of the Meuse, only a few hundred meters from the center of the city, yet shelters an unusually wide variety of habitats in its limited footprint. The reserve protects a recovered industrial landscape. Until the 1950s, the hillside was worked as a quarry producing lime and construction stone, and an old lime kiln is still visible on the ground. Since extraction ceased, the site has gradually returned to a wild state, allowing calcicole woodland, marly grassland, marsh, peat thickets, and a small pond to develop side by side. The protected area is notable less for its size than for the concentration of species it supports. Botanists have recorded around 225 plant species, including several orchids and rare ferns, while birdwatchers have identified about 95 bird species along with mammal, amphibian, reptile, moth, and beetle communities of similar richness. It is therefore a regionally important refuge for biodiversity embedded in an urban-adjacent setting.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
