Rincón de Franquía Habitat and Species Management Area

Rincón de Franquía is a habitat and species management area in northwestern Uruguay, situated in the Artigas department at the confluence of the Uruguay and Cuareim rivers, just north of the city of Bella Unión. Since 2013 it has formed part of Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas (SNAP), and it lies within the broader Campos de Bella Unión Important Bird Area, one of twenty-two IBAs across the country identified by Aves Uruguay and BirdLife. The reserve protects a floodplain mosaic of riverine forest, open park woodland, and seasonal wetlands that together support an exceptional share of Uruguay's recorded birdlife. The protected area occupies an ecologically strategic position on the triple border between Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Across the Cuareim river it borders Brazil's Espinilho State Park, while on the Argentine side it connects with the General Ávalos area around the mouth of the Miriñay river, creating a transnational mosaic of forest, grassland, and wetland habitats. This borderland geography gives Rincón de Franquía a conservation role that extends well beyond its own boundaries, acting as a connective node between three national protected-area systems. Within Uruguay the area is notable for its concentration of bird diversity relative to its size and for supporting some of the country's rarest seed-eating birds. It also holds a meaningful share of Uruguay's mammal, amphibian, and reptile records. While the reserve is small compared with many national parks elsewhere in South America, it functions as an important stepping stone for habitat connectivity and as a refuge for species that have declined elsewhere in the country.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
