Shilin Scenic Area

Shilin Scenic Area, popularly known as the Stone Forest, is one of China's most celebrated natural landmarks, located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County in Yunnan province, roughly 120 kilometers southeast of Kunming. The protected landscape consists of an extraordinary karst formation in which massive limestone rocks rise from the ground as tall, jagged pillars that resemble a petrified forest. Over hundreds of millions of years, dissolving limestone and tectonic uplift shaped the area into dense clusters of pinnacles, fissures, caves, and underground streams, creating a geological environment recognized internationally for its scale and visual drama. The scenic area has long been associated with the Yi people and the legend of Ashima, and it remains an important cultural landmark as well as a natural one. In 1982 it was among the first sites designated as a national key scenic area by China's State Council, and in 2007 it was inscribed as part of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it functions simultaneously as a national scenic area, a national geopark, and a World Geopark, drawing broad attention for the unusual character of its rock formations and their place in global karst science.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
