Staunings Ø

Staunings Ø is a narrow, elongated coastal peninsula lying parallel to the shore in Køge Bugt, on the eastern coast of Zealand between Solrød Strand and Køge in Denmark. Although often described informally as a barrier island, it is technically a long sand spit or offshore bar, threaded with low dunes and sheltering a lagoon on its landward side. The site has been protected under Danish nature conservation since 1999, together with the Jersie Strand area across the bay and a small group of islets and parkland. The reserve forms part of the Natura 2000 site Ølsemagle Strand og Staunings Ø, covering roughly 60 hectares of land together with several hundred hectares of adjacent sea, altogether a substantial protected coastal and marine complex. Ecologically, Staunings Ø is valued for its transitional coastal habitats: open strand, low dune systems, a sheltered lagoon slowly filling with reeds, patches of willow and other scrub, and shallow marine waters. It is one of the clearest examples on this stretch of Zealand of how mobile sand ridges accrete into stable coastal landforms over time, while also supporting distinctive brackish and freshwater wetland habitats.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
