Turtle Islands National Park

Turtle Islands National Park is a Malaysian marine park in the Sulu Sea, just a few kilometers north of Sandakan in Sabah. It encompasses three islands, Selingaan, Little Bakkungan, and Gulisaan, along with the surrounding coral reefs and open water. The park is best known as one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in Southeast Asia, where green and hawksbill turtles come ashore to lay their eggs almost year-round. The trio of islands forms the heart of a broader island chain named the Turtle Islands, whose remaining seven islands belong to the Philippines and make up the Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary in Tawi-Tawi. On the Malaysian side, the park combines remote island beaches, reef habitat, and turtle conservation infrastructure that has been active since the late 1960s. Turtle Islands National Park is significant both ecologically and as a model of long-running marine conservation in the region. It anchors a transnational turtle protection landscape across the Sulu Sea and provides visitors with a rare chance to witness wild sea turtles nesting and hatchlings being released into the sea.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
