A Vezo-led marine reserve where people and reefs are managed as one system

Velondriake

Velondriake is a locally managed marine area in southwest Madagascar whose name means "to live with the sea" in the Vezo dialect of Malagasy. It is one of the largest community-led marine reserves in the western Indian Ocean, covering roughly 64,000 hectares of coastal and marine habitat used by around 7,000 resident Vezo people. The reserve is notable for combining traditional Vezo fishing culture with structured marine conservation. Coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, baobab forests, and spiny forest habitats fall under its protection, with five permanent reef reserves, two permanent mangrove reserves, and a network of seasonal closures centered on reef octopus and mud crab fisheries. Velondriake has become a demonstration site for grassroots marine management. Periodic octopus fishery closures have produced dramatic catch increases, and the model has been shared internationally with communities and conservation groups from across the western Indian Ocean region and beyond. The approach pairs fisheries management with sea cucumber and seaweed aquaculture, mangrove restoration through a blue carbon project, community health services, environmental education, and homestay tourism.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
