West Altai State Nature Reserve

The West Altai State Nature Reserve is a strictly protected natural area situated in the western part of the Altai mountain system in eastern Kazakhstan. Established in 1992, it spans more than 86,000 hectares and safeguards mountain taiga, alpine vegetation, glacial lakes, and the upper headwaters of the Uba River system, a major tributary of the Irtysh. The reserve covers a mosaic of forested ridges and high-mountain terrain, including parts of the Ivanov, Kholzun, Koksin, Tigiretsk, Lineysk, Uba, and Ulbi ranges. Peaks rise above 2,500 meters, and granite outcrops shape unusual rocky landmarks across the landscape. Streams, cirques, moraines, and high-mountain bogs add to the diversity of the protected area. Recognized for its ecological richness, the reserve is home to brown bears, lynx, elk, maral deer, sable, and many rare bird species. In 2020 it was added to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, reinforcing its importance as a reference site for the conservation of Central Asian mountain taiga ecosystems.
