Al Jaghbub Oasis

The Al Jaghbub Oasis is a protected natural area in northeastern Libya, lying close to the Egyptian border and adjoining the small desert village of Jaghbub, a Berber settlement of roughly 400 people. It sits on the northern edge of the Libyan Desert in a deep depression, roughly 10 metres below sea level, where the surrounding escarpments expose layered Middle Miocene sediments rich in marine fossils. Designated to safeguard the region's native flora and fauna, the oasis is overseen by Libya's Technical Committee of Wildlife and National Parks. Historically, the oasis was a vital staging point for trans-Saharan caravans and for pilgrims journeying to Siwa, Cairo, and Mecca. Its wider significance grew when Muhammad ibn Ali as-Senussi relocated the headquarters of the Senussi movement here in 1856, after which Al Jaghbub developed into a fortress town anchored by a major Islamic university. Today the protected area preserves a quiet refuge for migratory waterfowl and supports a distinctive brackish-water ecosystem set against the vast Saharan landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
