Ankarana Special Reserve

Ankarana Special Reserve is a protected area in northern Madagascar, designated in 1956 and managed by Madagascar National Parks. It protects a small, only partially vegetated plateau built from middle Jurassic limestone roughly 150 million years old, shaped into one of the most dramatic karst landscapes in the Indian Ocean region. The reserve is best known for its tsingy, sharp pinnacles of eroded limestone that give the plateau a fortress-like appearance, along with sheer cliffs, deep gorges, and an extensive network of caves and underground rivers. Average rainfall near 2,000 millimetres per year has driven this ongoing sculpting of the rock and supports the dense vegetation that clings to the plateau. Its rugged relief and difficult terrain have shielded Ankarana from extensive human exploitation, leaving it as a refuge for lemurs, endemic birds, and a range of other wildlife. The massif also contains the longest mapped cave systems in Madagascar, and arguably in all of Africa, drawing researchers and speleologists alongside nature travelers.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
