Área Protegida Municipal Palmera de Saó

Área Protegida Municipal Palmera de Saó is a small municipal protected area in the lowlands of eastern Bolivia, situated within the Bolivian Chaco and bordered on its eastern edge by the Río Grande. It lies in the Cordillera province of the Santa Cruz department, roughly fifty kilometers southeast of the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and falls within the Municipal District of Riva Palacios in the municipality of Cabezas. The reserve was established specifically to conserve the saó palm, a locally and culturally important species whose leaves sustain a traditional handicraft economy in nearby communities such as Paurito, Tundi, Usuró, Tijera, Jorochi, the Guaraní pueblo of Santa Fe, and La Peña. Beyond the saó palm, the area protects additional commercially valuable forest trees, including ochoó, tajibo, and mara, and supports a range of native wildlife typical of the Chaco lowlands. Though compact in size, the protected area plays an outsized role in preserving both a culturally emblematic plant species and the traditional livelihoods that depend on it. Its creation reflects growing municipal-level conservation efforts in lowland Bolivia, where rural communities, indigenous peoples, and regional governments increasingly collaborate to safeguard natural resources that underpin local economies and identities.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
