Auf den Hesseln bei Naumburg

Auf den Hesseln bei Naumburg is a small nature reserve and EU Habitats Directive site (FFH-Gebiet) in the town of Naumburg, in the Kassel district of northern Hesse, Germany. Covering roughly 19.6 hectares, it lies within the larger Naturpark Habichtswald and protects a mosaic of south- and east-facing calcareous grasslands, scrubby woodland edges, and a short stretch of the Ballenbach stream valley. The reserve is best known for its species-rich limestone dry grasslands (Kalkmagerrasen), which form part of the Natura 2000 habitat types 6110 and 6210 and support a rich assemblage of orchids, gentians, juniper, wild thyme, and a wide range of butterflies. A disused mussel limestone quarry in the northern part of the site adds further habitat complexity, while the narrow alluvial woodland along the Ballenbach contributes a contrasting wetland-forest element. Because almost the entire reserve is encircled by agricultural land, Auf den Hesseln bei Naumburg functions as a small but ecologically significant island of semi-natural calcareous habitat within an otherwise heavily farmed landscape. Traditional sheep grazing and mowing help to keep the dry grasslands open and have shaped their present-day botanical diversity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
