Bidjigal Reserve

Bidjigal Reserve is a 186-hectare nature reserve in New South Wales, Australia, situated mainly within The Hills Shire with a small southern section crossing the M2 Motorway into the City of Parramatta. It spans six suburban localities of greater Sydney, including North Rocks, Northmead, Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill, West Pennant Hills, and Carlingford, forming a substantial patch of bushland embedded within one of Australia's most urbanised metropolitan regions. The reserve's name commemorates the Bidjigal people who inhabited the area before European settlement, and it is associated with the resistance leader Pemulwuy, who used the surrounding lands as a base for attacks on early colonial homesteads. Its boundaries are defined by major suburban roads and adjoining green spaces, with Eric Mobbs Reserve lying to the west, Castle Hill Road to the north, Oakes Road to the east, and James Ruse Drive along its southern edge. Ecologically, the reserve protects a mixture of dry sandstone gully forest, remnants of Blue Gum High Forest, ridgetop woodlands, and small areas of Wianamatta Shales, traversed by a long stretch of Darling Mills Creek. Its landscape also preserves significant Aboriginal cultural heritage sites, including rock shelters and one of the oldest dated Aboriginal habitation sites in the broader Sydney region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
